F-35 maker’s stock downgraded after alleged China’s 6th-gen fighter debut: US media

 ;

An F-35 fighter jet performs during the annual Wings Over Houston Airshow at the Ellington Airport, state of Texas, the United States, Oct. 19, 2019. The annual airshow kicked off at the Ellington Airport Saturday, with aerial performances and displays.

Stock of US arms firm Lockheed Martin, maker of the fifth-generation fighter jet F-35, was downgraded to Hold from Buy at Deutsche Bank with a price target of $523, down from $611. An analyst at the bank named "China's combat aircraft modernization efforts" as a reason behind the decision, after videos emerged online suspected of showing alleged China's six-generation fighter jet.

Deutsche Bank says it lost conviction in its original upgrade thesis from July, and struggles to find new reasons to remain constructive on the shares, US news outlet Business Insider reported on Thursday.

"We're downgrading Lockheed to Hold [from Buy] as we feel our prior thesis struggles to hold water and we have increased concern on the long-term support for F-35 in the face of China's combat aircraft modernization efforts," US news outlet Barron's quoted Deutsch Bank analyst Scott Deuschle as saying.

Deuschle said he sees "the reveal of further advancements in combat aircraft capabilities by China as potentially undermining long-term [Department of Defense] demand for the F-35 aircraft."

The Barron's report noted that China recently published videos of its sixth-generation jet fighter. The F-35 - which accounts for some 25% of Lockheed's total sales - is a fifth-generation jet fighter.

A number of videos and photos emerged on Chinese social media on December 26, showing alleged test flights of a new type of aircraft, shape of which resembles the ginkgo leaf. Shortly after the emergence of the large "ginkgo leaf" aircraft, another video circulated online on December 26, showing another new type of aircraft, seemingly smaller than the "ginkgo leaf" one, in an apparent flight test.

The Washington Times quoted defense analysts as saying that the two new fighters "appear to be Beijing's first advanced sixth-generation stealth fighters."

Neither the Chinese military nor the Chinese defense industry has verified the videos and photos, or made any official announcement on the aircraft as of press time. However, the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Eastern Theater Command on Wednesday released a music video to celebrate the New Year, with a scene showing a ginkgo leaf and a bird triggering netizens' associations to the alleged debuts of China's sixth-generation fighter jets.

While the US has sixth-generation jet fighter programs, referred to as next-generation air dominance, or NGAD, and Lockheed is likely bidding to provide those planes, how the process will play out isn't clear, Barron's said.

The US Air Force has decided to let the incoming Trump administration make its own decision on the path forward for its NGAD fighter. In the summer of 2024, the US Air Force paused its effort to develop and build a sixth-generation fighter amid concerns about its potential costs, US media outlet the Defense News reported on December 6.

Wang Ya'nan, chief editor of Beijing-based Aerospace Knowledge magazine, told the Global Times on Friday that there have been several videos on test flights of alleged China's next-generation aircraft, but there has not been an official confirmation.

However, despite of this information being unconfirmed, Lockheed Martin's long-term prospect remains in doubt, leading to the downgrading of its stock.

While the videos are not confirmed, they indicated to the outside world that China is progressing fast in the scientific research and exploration of its next-generation military aircraft. By comparison, there are no publicly known videos showing the testing of the US' sixth-generation fighter jet, Wang noted.

Chinese military expert Song Zhongping told the Global Times on Friday that Lockheed Martin has wasted too much resources on the F-35. In the meantime, China has developed not only the J-20 and J-35 of the same generation, but also possibly aircraft of the next generation, if the videos turn out to be true.

Everything You Need to Know About Morning Wood

 <

Morning wood — or as it’s formally known, nocturnal penile tumescence (NPT) — is a common occurrence for many people. From time to time, you may wake up with an erect penis. This is most common in younger men, although men of all ages may experience NPT.

Many people assume a morning erection is a sign of sexual stimulation. However, this is not always the case. Morning wood is likely the response your body has to one of several natural occurrences.

We use “boys” and “men” in this article to reflect the terms that have been historically used to gender people. But your gender identity may not align with how your body responds to this occurrence.

What causes morning wood?

The cause of NPT is likely dependent on many factors. Doctors have a few theories that help explain why people wake up with an erect penis from time to time, but none of these theories are supported by concrete, medical evidence.

These theories include:

Physical stimulation

Though your eyes are shut, your body is still aware of what’s happening around you. If you or your partner accidentally touch or graze your genitals, you may become erect. Your body senses the stimulation and responds with an erection.

Hormone shifts

Your testosterone level is at its highest in the morning after you wake up. It is highest immediately after waking up from the rapid eye movement (REM) sleep stage.

The increase in this hormone alone may be enough to cause an erection, even in the absence of any physical stimulation.

As men get older, usually between ages 40 and 50, natural testosterone levels begin to fall. As this level decreases, episodes of NPT may decrease as well.

Brain relaxation

During your waking hours, your body releases hormones to suppress erections. When you’re asleep, your body releases less of those hormones. Combine this with other reasons you may experience an erection in your sleep, and NPT becomes more likely.

What’s clearer is what does not cause morning wood. For example, needing to urinate is not responsible for morning wood. Some people believe a morning erection keeps them from urinating during their sleep, but this is not true.

Morning wood is not always a sign of sexual stimulation. In many cases, NPT is not caused by dreams or thoughts of a sexual nature.

Men of all ages can experience NPT. It’s healthy at any age and is a sign of a properly functioning blood and nervous system in and around the penis.

Boys may experience NPT as young as infancy. NPT may also occur in men in their 60s and 70s. It will become less frequent as erectile dysfunction (ED) issues begin to occur, and those issues become more frequent with age.

You may experience an erection three to five times each night. Unrelated to what’s in your dreams, NPT can last longer than 30 minutes. Some men may experience an erection for as long as 2 hours during their sleep. Most erections will ease within a few minutes of waking up.

Having an erect penis when you wake is an indicator of healthy blood and nerve supply to the penis. The presence of NPT also likely indicates that you’re physically capable of getting and maintaining an erection while awake.

If you stop experiencing NPT or notice that you’re not waking up with an erect penis anymore, this may be an early sign of an underlying medical problem.

Most likely, this is a sign of physical ED. You may have something happening within your body that’s preventing adequate blood or nerve supply for proper erectile function. You may be more likely to experience ED if you:

People with certain disabilities may also be more likely to experience ED.

Medications may affect your ability to experience morning wood. Painkillers and some antidepressant medications may prevent NPT.

NPT may become less common as you get older, but if you’re young and are not experiencing a morning erection or if your erections suddenly stop, it may be time to contact a doctor.

Morning wood is healthy, and it’s rarely a reason to contact your doctor. However, two situations may mean it’s time to make an appointment. These include:

You stop having morning wood

If you frequently experienced morning wood but now are not experiencing it at all or have fewer erections, you should talk with a doctor.

While it’s natural for episodes of NPT to occur less frequently with age, a sudden drop in frequency may be a sign of an underlying medical problem.

You begin experiencing painful erections

Most morning erections will subside within 30 minutes of waking up. If your erections last more than an hour after you wake up or if they become painful, you should make an appointment with a doctor.

It’s hard to declare “too much” and “too little” when it comes to NPT. Some people experience a morning erection every day. Some experience it less than once a week.

During your annual physical exam, talk with your doctor about how frequently you’re experiencing morning wood. If you’re not experiencing it enough, your doctor may be able to help diagnose a reason.

Morning wood is very common. It’s an indication of typical blood and nerve supply to the penis. Most young men will experience morning wood several times per week. As men grow older, they begin experiencing it less frequently.

If you stop experiencing NPT, this may be an early sign of an underlying medical problem. Pay attention to how often you experience morning wood. If it stops, speak with a doctor.

Waiver on quit rent penalties in Penang

If they pay between March 1 and May 31, they will get a 50% discount on the penalties.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the exco meeting last week decided on this move for all land and parcel owners.

Land owners are those who own houses and land, while parcel owners are usually in joint property like condominiums, apartments or townhouses.

“This is to recover RM40.1mil in unpaid quit rent involving 100,000 accounts.

“If these remain unpaid, property owners can lose their land or parcels,” he said in a Facebook post yesterday.

He added that the incentive aims to reduce the burden on land and parcel owners, with 107,908 accounts being late on payments and slapped with penalties. The waiver applies to all land and parcel owners, including those with penalty notices under Sections 6A and 11.

The Chief Minister said the incentive is only for lump-sum payment and not for instalments or settled overdue penalties.

Payments can be made at district land offices or online through the PgLAND web portal.

For details, land and parcel owners can contact the Penang Land and Mines office at 04-650 5844/5847/5849 or the district land office.
